Mothering Nature, by David Sobel

Mothering Nature
If you want your child to save the earth, first allow them to love it.
Here’s how:

  • Give them hands-on experience full of excitement and wonder.
  • Let them climb trees, pick apples, skip rocks, catch fireflies, count stars, and gaze at the moon.
  • Don’t overwhelm them with the bigger picture by worrying them with situations they can’t change, like endangered species.
  • Give them concrete tasks they can perform to make a difference today, like picking up litter in a local park, recycling, and reducing water use.

(David Sobel, of Antioch New England Graduate School suggests “no tragedies before fourth grade”, indicating that overwhelming kids with environmental woes before age 11 is counterproductive)
